In a way, the layout is somewhat similar to something one might see in a Novotel Living or Staybridge Suites. There is the sofa corner by the window, the bed in the middle of the room and a small dining table in the kitchen area.

While a kitchen comes in handy in some countries, in Thailand, it is usually easy and quite affordable to eat outside, so I am not sure how often people really cook for themselves, but at least the proper plates and cutlery come in handy also when eating takeaway food.

There is also a capsule coffee machine and some teabags, plus free daily drinking water.

What is certainly handy is the in-room washing machine. While detergent is not complimentary, you can get some from the reception or from a nearby 7/11.

For washing oneself, there is a bathroom with a window and a bathtub-shower combo. As toiletries, TRIBE is using Kevin Murphy series. My gripe with this bathroom was that it is rather tightly spaced, and the rainforest showerhead is adjusted for short people, while the shower handle is also at a low position to hold.

As a less common extra feature - all rooms in this hotel have air purifier. Considering that the air quality in Bangkok can get rather bad on some days of the year, it is nice to have extra feature. Also, as it is quite new hotel, besides the usual universal power socket and USB-A chargers, this hotel has also USB-C charging sockets in the rooms.

If you are holding Accor ALL Gold (or higher) status, you can also expect a welcome amenity, which in this hotel seems to be some chocolate and cookies.

For welcome drinks, there are several F&B menus to choose from, but we decided to try out the Mexican-Japanese fusion restaurant, Taco Hachi, on the 27th floor.

While some Accor hotels have different menus based on your elite tier (Silver vs Gold vs Platinum and above), here all elites have the same menu. In the picture, you see both of their possible welcome cocktails - gin and vodka-based options.

Besides decent welcome drinks, Taco Hachi had also tasty food and great sunset views. If you happen to be Accor+ member, you can also get 30% discount on your food bill.

Breakfast is served in Tribe Table on the 5th floor and available daily from 6.30 to 10.30. For a mid-range hotel, the offer seemed decent enough, with several protein sources and vegetables to choose from, as well as on-demand fresh noodles and eggs.

The pool of the hotel seemed very popular and busy, while gym had some more space. Just due to the popularity of the pool, you might have a challenge getting a seat later in the day, but otherwise, it seemed very nice and long enough to actually swim, not just to take a plunge. There is also Onsen, but we did not have time to check that out.

Overall, TRIBE Living Bangkok Sukhumvit 39 is a decent hotel and worth a stay, if you look for a bit more residential setting during your stay in Bangkok and would prefer to stay in this neighbourhood. Or, if you are into Japanese-Mexican fusion food, we recommend checking out Taco Hachi even when not staying overnight.

The King Studio, where we stayed, felt spacious and fresh - the hotel was opened in August 2024, thus, currently, it has minimal wear and tear.

King Studio is their entry-level room, but it felt spacious and had a practical layout. Perhaps more space could have been saved by just having one sink instead of two, and if that one sink were within the bathroom.

Regarding the bathroom, while there is no bathtub, it does have a proper spacious shower booth, with Peter Thomas Roth toiletries. And typical for toilets in the region, there is a handheld shower as well. On other toiletries, the selection was limited - just toothbrushes, but no shaving kit or cotton swabs.

Other amenities were quite modern - instead of classical iron, the room had a steam iron, and for power, it had a universal power socket along with USB-A and USB-C sockets. Tea & coffee were quite basic - just some Dilmah teas and instant coffee. Plus, there is a fridge, which the guests can fill up with their own drinks and snacks (there are two big grocery shops next door - TOPS and BigC).

If you would like to get your laundry done while staying at the hotel, there is a common laundry room with 2 washers (charged 60 THB per load) and 2 dryers (charged 80 THB per load).

The fitness room offers panoramic views of the area, and while not the largest, it covers the basics for both cardio and strength training.

Even more panoramic views are on the rooftop: there is a pool, an extended seating area and in the evenings also a bar, plus an indoor restaurant. As this is on the 25th floor, it can get quite windy at times, which can be quite refreshing on warmer days.

Breakfast covered the basics but was overall quite average and likely would get boring during a longer stay. Still, you could get eggs done your way, and there was a noodle soup station as well. Compared to the breakfast at Hilton Garden Inns in Bangkok, this was felt weaker than both Hilton Garden Inn Silom and Hilton Garden Inn Riverside.

So, if not for breakfast, why stay here? The room is comfy, and the location can be strategic - it is great for an overnight stopover when driving to/from Bangkok towards further Rayong beaches or Trat / Koh Chang area. Also, when you have a rental car, and you are interested in discovering some Rayong area beaches (some of which are really nice - for example, this), it could be a good base for your daytrips in the region. Overall, we’ll most likely return in the future.

The lobby is very airy, and upon check-in, we also got refreshing welcome drinks. Luckily, without extra sugar, which is quite rare in Thailand (where otherwise drinks tend to be very sweet).

This time we stayed in a Standard King room, which faced the sea from the balcony. Compared to Standard Hua Hin, Standard rooms in Standard Pattaya seem larger, offering plenty of space for you, your bags, and possibly an extra rollaway bed.

As you can see from the balcony, all rooms at Standard Pattaya have balconies. Essentially, Standard and Deluxe rooms have the same layout; the difference is in the floors. Standard rooms from the ground floor to the 4th floor (where we stayed), while Deluxe rooms are on floors 5 and 6, offering somewhat better/higher views.

The hotel had prepared some sweet and savoury Thai cookies as welcome amenities this time. While Standard rooms do not have a capsule coffee machine, drip coffee pods were provided along with better-than-average tea as well. And if there is two of you, each can use different colour mug to avoid possible mix-ups.

Bathroom is simple: spacious shower booth, no bathtub (those can be only found in suites) and Standard brand-standard Davines amenities. While in-room slippers are provided, the beach flip-flops can also be found only in higher category suites.

Talking about the suites, while I did not see the entry-level suites, as those were occupied during my stay, I got a tour of two suite categories.

Firstly, Deluxe One Bedroom Suite with Private Pool. As you enter this suite, you’ll notice the bathroom near the entrance. Compared to usual rooms, in this suite, in addition to a bathtub, you’re also getting an outside shower - which you can use on both rainy days for a natural rain(forest)shower or the usual shower in a rain-free situation. There is also an orange chair available, should you wish to have an audience for your shower experience.

Despite being a high-category suite (it is a 3rd category suite), there is no wall separation between the bedroom and living room area. Instead, there is just one big room with an extra sofa in the middle of the room. While the sofa might seem cute, it might not be the most comfortable for TV viewing. But most likely, you are not staying in this suite for the TV, but for the pool experience instead.

While the pool is not long enough for swimming laps, it is sufficient for an adult plunge, or if you have kid(s) staying with you, it seems spacious enough for them to play in. There is also a private sundeck and an extra sofa by the poolside.

Compared to standard rooms, this suite also comes with an Illy capsule coffee machine, a dedicated big ice-sink (currently empty, but can be asked to be filled) and Camper beach sandals.

I also managed to take a look at the 4th category suite, Deluxe One Bedroom Suite with Ocean View and Private Pool, which had a slightly different layout.

Upon suite entry, you were already by the private poolside. Compared to the previous suite, this one had a bigger/longer private pool, offering also views of the main pool. The sundeck area here is also bigger and could easily host a family or small group of friends.

The bedroom and living room in this suite can be separated by a sliding door, offering extra privacy at times, when needed.

And while this suite does not have an outside shower, it has a small, quiet outside courtyard, good for reading a book or meditation moments.

The bathroom in this suite does not have windows, unlike the previous suite category. But it certainly is more spacious.

Overall, while both of the suites are nice, one likely needs to consider what their needs are - one of them offers more privacy and outdoor shower experience, the other offers a bigger, yet more public, pool, with a bigger living room and a mini courtyard.

Besides these private pools of suites, there are also 2 public pools, usable by all guests. The bigger one can be used by both adults and kids, while the second, smaller pool, on the rooftop of a restaurant, is reserved for adult use only.

And if you want to swim in the sea, Standard Pattaya has plenty of beachside loungers to chill on.

What I liked was that the beach chairs had sunbrellas and there was also additional shade provided by the trees. Compared to some other Pattaya area hotels we have been before, so far this kind of beach setup was our favourite.

If the weather is great, the sunsets look very scenic at their beach club, Esmé. While they had some good cocktails, we really enjoyed their tacos, blending authentic Mexican flavours with Thai-inspired ingredients. They were so good that we got even the second round. And if you are a World of Hyatt member, you get 10% discount.

While previous Standards we have been have been more adult-focused, this Standard is also welcoming families and has a dedicated Kids Club - offering an outdoor playground and an inside activity room for rainy days.

There is also a gym for those interested in getting some workouts done during their stay.

In the mornings, it is also worth taking a bit extra time to enjoy breakfast. While the brand Standard at Standard foresees an à la carte menu, at this Standard, there is a buffet-only breakfast (but you can ask for eggs your way, at the dedicated counter).

Plenty of quality protein options, vegetables, fruits and something also for a sweet tooth.

To navigate around the resort, they also give you a map, which is also as your room keycard holder.

Overall, it was an enjoyable stay and we would be happy to return in the future as well. While the hotel was running almost at full occupancy during our stay, it did not feel crowded and it was a pleasant experience. Even our car enjoyed its stay - the car park has solar roof - keeping your car in a shadow for keeping it cool.

Arrival experience

The hotel has a rather compact lobby with some sofas and check-in desks. It felt a bit smaller than at Courtyard Bangkok. But it was not crowded and sufficient for waiting while your room might be still prepared. Many are likely using Grab, Bolt or taxi to get to/from the hotel, but, there is BTS not far away, plus you can make use of a free hotel shuttle service to get to Asok BTS station or Emporium Mall nearby.

Bonvoy Elite Perks at Courtyard

If you happen to be Marriott Bonvoy Platinum, Titanium or Ambassador member, you can choose one of the following welcome gifts:

• 500 points per stay

• 10 USD F&B credit per night (member +1)

• Daily breakfast buffet (member +1)

While officially Courtyard hotels without lounges are not required to provide breakfast as a welcome gift choice, this Courtyard, like other Courtyards in Thailand, are kind enough to offer this. I selected breakfast as my welcome gift and I am covering breakfast options later in the post.

This Courtyard does not have a Club Lounge, but as an extra perk for Bonvoy elites, the hotel was also offering complimentary drinks in the evening along with limited snacks. Plus 2 pieces of laundry per day. It seemed like this might be an opening period benefit, but I hope they’ll keep it. In the competitive Bangkok hotel market, it does not make much sense to reduce benefits once regular customers are used to them.

Part of Bonvoy elite perks was also an in-room welcome amenity of Thai sweets.

Deluxe Room with Bathtub

I had booked a usual Deluxe room and got a very minor complimentary upgrade to a Deluxe room with a bathtub. Deluxe rooms, with or without bathtub range 24sqm/258sqft to 27sqm/291sqft in size.

The room felt fresh but slightly tight. Instead of a proper working desk in older Courtyards, this has a circular multi-purpose dining and working table. The bedding was excellent - soft and fluffy. It reminded me of Courtyard in Phuket Town, where they have also this new generation Courtyard bedding, which is better than the previous generation, found at Courtyard Bangkok (the old one, which is different from Sukhumvit 20).

The bathroom was spacious, with separate bathtub and shower areas. Toiletries were of Nirvae, which is brand standard for Courtyards.

Being a new generation hotel, it had well-designed power outlets - both USB A and C ports were available, as even a wireless charging clock-speaker for phones. And multi-plug supported main power plugs. No need to use adaptors.

The wardrobe has limited space but contains bathrobes and a safe deposit box. The minibar fridge has some extra space for your items as well, if you need to keep some food items or drinks cool. The are some chargeable drinks and snacks part of the minibar as well, besides free Dilmah teas and instant Nescafe coffee.

Now, while I enjoyed the bed comfort of this Deluxe room, I did not enjoy the view. It seems like most rooms in this hotel have quite limited views and should likely keep curtains on most of the time.

Gym and Pool

Fitness areas - gym and pool - are located on the 7th floor. They looked clean and decently sized for a Courtyard. Sadly, the pool is right near rooftop AC/HVAC units, which made very loud noise and it became rather annoying after just a few minutes of staying there. So, if you are noise-sensitive and love sunbathing by the pool, you might need to consider an alternative hotel.

Bonvoy Elite Happy Hour

This hotel does not have a classical Club lounge, but as an alternative, they were offering some free drinks for Bonvoy elites in the evening, between 17.00 and 19.00. Nothing too exciting, and certainly not food-wise filling, compared to usual Club lounges, but nice to have it as an option.

Breakfast

Breakfast was decent for its class, I would say even a bit above average for a mid-range hotel in Bangkok, and I liked it more than at Courtyard Bangkok (close to Ratchadamri and Chit Lom), where I had stayed before.

Pastries were well done, and they even had two types of scones. And those scones tasted better than I had sampled at JW Marriott or Conrad Bangkok.

All in all, a wide range of hot and cold options meet various dietary needs. I enjoyed the grilled fish with fresh vegetables and a fruity breakfast bowl, where I mixed some berries, mango, oatmeal, cinnamon and yoghurt. Plus the scones.

Internet Speed

For a new hotel, the speed certainly was on the lower end of the spectrum, while latency was decent. While it enabled to get things done, for more demanding tasks this is certainly not enough and I hope they’ll upgrade their speed soon.

Concluding thoughts

In a number of ways it is a nice hotel - the location is quite central, breakfast was tasty, the bed was comfy, the shower had decent pressure and temperature. For most travellers that is likely all they need for most of their stays.

However, if you are into data-demanding internet tasks, chilling peacefully by the poolside or would like to enjoy scenic city views from your room windows, this is not the right hotel for you.

In the context of price, this hotel seems to usually sell entry level rooms at ca 4000 THB all-in, for room only basis, or ca 4700 THB all-in for breakfast inclusive rates. In this price segment, Bangkok is competitive and there are many alternatives, depending which part of the city you need to be and what features are important for you. I feel that they are a bit overpriced - I would opt to stay with them again if they were about 1000THB cheaper, closer to Aloft, Four Points and the other Courtyard. Or spend a bit more and head to Le Meridien instead.

While Thailand already has many Marriott Bonvoy hotels, this is the first Moxy in Thailand and the biggest in Asia-Pacific, with over 500 rooms.

Arrival experience

On the ground floor, there is a small arrival lobby that has doors both to the street and Market Mall, hosted in the same building. The main lobby is located on the 9th floor. Check-in (and -out) takes place at their bar.

Being there on opening day, we got a special gift box, which included a small Moxy teddy, a pair of socks for 1 person, one luggage tag, some stickers and 1 lollipop.

As part of the Moxy brand, they also gave welcome drinks during the check-in. The drink was all right, but frankly, I prefer hotels giving out welcome drink vouchers so that you can choose later the time when you’d wish to get the drink. Just two choices were available: a fixed-selection cocktail or a mocktail.

Bonvoy Elite Perks at Moxy

Moxy Bangkok offers Marriott Bonvoy Platinum/Titanium/Ambassador members as a welcome gift choice one of the following:

• 500 points per stay

• 10 USD F&B credits per night (member +1)

• Two items from Grab&Go per day (member +1)

I opted for 10 USD credits (350THB), which I used to partially offset breakfast costs.

These perks are similar to what you could get in Courtyard, by terms and conditions. However, Courtyards in Thailand have decided to be more generous and offer breakfast as one of the welcome gift choices as well. Moxy has decided to go by the bare minimum requirements.

Rooms

Most rooms are tight and small, at 18sqm/194sqft, similar to what you would find in Ibis hotels. Their assumption is that most of the day, you stay outside the room and use it just for sleeping and showers. While Ibis rooms at least have a desk, the base category rooms in Moxy do not have one. So, if you are hoping to make some Zoom calls for working while staying there, make sure to book a higher-category room.

Each floor has just two bigger rooms (Corner Queen/Twin, and Deluxe), which make up just 7% of the total rooms. This means that during high occupancy periods, there is little chance for upgrades. There is also a third category, Loft rooms, which are 20sqm/215sqft in size and fit both a queen bed and a bunk bed.

Initially, as Bonvoy Titanium, I was offered an upgrade to Corner Queen, but upon asking, they made a one-time exceptional upgrade to the Deluxe room, which is 36sqm/387sqft in size.

Moxy Deluxe Room

Deluxe rooms are the biggest in the hotel and I would say that they could even call them suites, as the living room is physically separated by the sliding door from the bedroom.

There is also a table for two - could be used for working or dining, and extra space for luggage, should you travel with more than just a carry-on.

The safe is in the drawer of the bedroom and is quite small - if you have a bigger laptop, it would not fit in. There is also an empty mini fridge, which you can stock up with your favourite snacks or drinks from the neighbouring BigC grocery shop. Two complimentary bottles of drinking water, some teabags and instant coffee can be found as well.

To keep your devices charged, there are universal power ports along with USB charging ports (type A only).

There is no bath in the bathroom, a shower only. To keep costs low, there is also no sliding door of the shower cubicle, so if you have a warm water shower, the whole bathroom gets quite steamy. There are also only 2 knobs to place your used towels - I wish they would have added some more. Colorful flip-flops are a nice touch, but more useful at beach resorts than in a city hotel without a pool.

This is the room we stayed overnight and I would return if the price is right.

Moxy Corner Queen Room

While less spacious than the Deluxe room, Corner Queen (or Twin) certainly has an edge over the standard Moxy rooms.

The bedside area and bathroom are the same as standard Moxy rooms, but the wall with TV is angled and it creates extra space for placing a table.

The bathroom of a Corner room is the same as any other standard room would have. There is just one tiny knob on the wall to put your towel to hang.

Corner rooms are good if you need a table to work/dine on, but don’t need the extra space and dedicated living room, which Deluxe rooms would provide.

Moxy Loft Room

Loft rooms are mostly targeting families, which need extra space for kids travelling with parent(s).

They are essentially Moxy rooms, where they have squeezed in an extra bunk bed, in addition to a queen bed. At 20sqm/215sqft, they are quite tight and besides the beds there is little space left for any of your belongings.

Still, even besides the bunk bed, on both levels they have been thoughtful and added a small shelf and power ports, to charge mobile devices.

The bathroom is compact but sufficient. I suspect that due to missing a sliding door on the shower cubicle, the non-shower area might get quite wet as well during the showers.

Overcoming luggage space challenges

If you have bags, that do not fit your room, there are also 84 lockers on 9th floor. They can likely be used also when wishing to keep your bags at the hotel for some extra hours after your check-out.

Fitness

Moxy Bangkok has no swimming pool, just a small gym on 9th floor.

Shared spaces

As at Moxy you are likely expected to just sleep & shower in the room, the rest of the time you’ll likely spend around the city or in shared spaces on the 9th of the hotel.

If the weather is too warm or rainy, you’ll be likely inside, where you can find different seating options and upbeat music playing in the background. Or if it is a pleasant afternoon/evening, you might be in their outdoor space.

Food options

Currently, just there is just one bar/restaurant on site, on the 9th floor, which doubles also as lobby space and check-in/out area. Later in the year they plan to open also rooftop bar on 32nd floor. There is also Grab&Go stand for some snacks. Overall, it feels that there is more focus on drinks than food.

If you wish to eat something else, you can try out other restaurants in the mall on the lower floors of the building or walk over to CentralWorld across the hotel via the Skywalk.

Breakfast

Breakfast, while not included in the rate, costs 459 THB per person. If you are Marriott Bonvoy Platinum elite (or higher), you can use your welcome gift of 10 USD per day (350THB) per person to partially offset the cost of breakfast.

Compared to other Marriott Bonvoy hotels in Bangkok, Moxy’s breakfast is the weakest in quality and selection. Still, it does not mean you’d leave hungry. There are various egg dishes on demand and limited hot and cold buffet selections.

The pastries were well done, and the two kinds of cheese were of good quality, but the yoghurt was of a low-end brand. Juices were from concentrate. Hot food didn’t taste as good as for example in Aloft or Courtyard.

Considering that the hotel has 500 rooms, they seem to have built the breakfast space in mind so that many people will skip breakfast, as otherwise, it would be quite tight to fit all the people in the morning in the limited space.

Concluding thoughts

Overall, it is a nice new hotel in Bangkok. Well-located, offering easy access to the BTS Skytrain network and surrounding malls.

Would I return? Well, it depends, as Bangkok has so many hotels to choose from. It depends also on whether you already have elite status with any of the hotel chains or not.

While I liked the Deluxe room I stayed in, their current nightly price of ca 6800 THB (including taxes, ca 190USD / 175€ / 255 SGD) without breakfast is on the steep side. Even the standard Moxy rooms, at ca 4500 THB (including taxes, ca 125USD / 116€ / 169 SGD) are not that competitive for Bangkok. Add extra meals in and you likely might see better value at other hotels in the neighbourhood. But if you are up for cheerful and youthful vibes in the shared spaces, and skip the breakfast, don’t work from a hotel room and are willing to pay the premium, you’re in the right place.

I’ll be likely returning to see their 32nd-floor rooftop bar, once it is open later in the year, but until then, if I stay with Marriott Bonvoy hotels in Bangkok, I likely opt for another property instead, due to better pricing and benefits.

When I have been reading hotel reviews on Google Maps, Tripadvisor or other places, previous guests have also been giving “stars” to hotels, usually ranging from 1 to 5, but looking deeper, you often see those opinions are somewhat subjective. You might have seen similar patterns yourself as well.

The good news is that we have been taking pictures of those during our stays. In the past, we did not find a perfect medium to post them and make them accessible for detailed analysis. We hope our new community here on Substack will be in good hands.
